VARANASI: Except some minor incidents of clashes in Mau district, the voting for urban local bodies in the districts of Azamgarh and Mirzapur divisions passed off peacefully on Thursday. Some Muslim voters were allegedly thrashed by Samajwadi Party supporters to stop them from voting while some voters were nabbed with fake identity cards in Mau.
SP Mau Avinash Pandey said that some persons were injured in a clash between two groups in Kopaganj. The police are investigating the matter, he said adding that an FIR would be registered as per the complaint by the injured persons.
The injured persons -Akra, Umar, Usman, Saima, Aslam, Sonu and Monu alleged that the SP candidate contesting from ward-9 of Kopaganj Nagar Panchayat and his supporters were pressurizing those, whom they doubt that they would not vote in his favour, to stay at home. Those who tried to go to polling booths to vote were attacked, they alleged adding that many persons were also targeted on denying to go for fake voting.
Meanwhile, some burqa clad women were caught by the police from the booths of Kopaganj and Mohammadabad police station areas with fake identity cards. The SP said that three women from Kopaganj and two in Mohammadabad areas were caught after their Adhaar card numbers were found fake on checking. Many other persons were also taken under custody at several other booths while making bid for fake voting, he said adding that detailed reports were being compiled.
Polling in other districts including Azamgarh and Ballia of Azamgarh division, Mirzapur, Bhadohi and Sonbhadra of Mirzapur divisions passed off peacefully.
