Sangam City Likely To Get Metrolite Before Mahakumbh | Allahabad News – Times of India

PRAYAGRAJ: The proposal of operating Metrolite in the district will now gain momentum. Metrolite is a light rail urban transit system being planned in India for cities with lower ridership projection and as a feeder system for the existing metro systems. It will cater to lower passenger capacity at a reduced cost than a metro line. It will have dedicated tracks, separated from the road.
The Urban Mass Transit Company (UMTC) has submitted its survey report to RITES. Based on the report of UMTC, RITES would now prepare a plan and place it at a meeting to be chaired by Divisional Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant and then the same would be sent to the government. Sources inform that after getting an approval, the detailed project report (DPR) on what is being termed as ‘Metrolite’ will be prepared. Last year, the idea of having a Metrolite was approved in principle in a meeting chaired by Principal Secretary Urban Development. It was also decided that the same would be made available to commuters of Sangam City before Mahakumbh 2025. Survey has been done for operating Metrolite on two routes of the city—Phaphamau and Bamrauli and Andawa (Jhunsi) to Bamrauli. Either of the two routes could start before the Mahakumbh. In yet another development, a large number of commuters of the Sangam city would be able enjoy electric bus ride before Mahakhumbh 2025. Prayagraj will get 100 new electric buses before 2025. In the year 2023, the fleet of 50 buses will be included in electric buses. The charging station built in Naini will be responsible for the maintenance of the buses. These fully air-conditioned buses are equipped with CCTV cameras for the safety of passengers, comfortable seats and other modern amenities. Its operation will also help in reducing pollution in the city. The buses will start reaching Prayagraj from May and the process of registration will be completed before December 2024. Presently 50 electric buses are plying on five routes of the city. “A proposal was sent to operate 150 electric buses in Prayagraj, 50 are presently operating in the city and in months to come, we will start getting more such buses”, said regional manager, UP State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) MK Trivedi.
Meanwhile, the Public Works Department (PWD) has released funds worth Rs 41.88 crore for the construction of rail over bridge (ROB) near Cheoki station in Naini on Prayagraj-Pandit Deen Dayan Upadhyay (Mughalsarai) railway section of North Central Railway. After the approval of the budget from Minister Jitin Prasad, now the work of ROB will gain momentum. With this, those coming from the Banda route towards Prayagraj will get relief from the daily traffic congestion.
This ROB was approved five years back. By March 2022, NCR had spent Rs 7 crore on ROB. The main pillar of ROB was ready. Meanwhile, the army objected to the work due to which the work stopped. After getting the consent of the Army, the PWD has now released the budget of the remaining amount.
