Varanasi: Government Railway Police Varanasi Junction (Cantt railway station) caught a youth with cash over Rs 27 lakhs on Saturday. The matter has been handed over to Income Tax department for investigation.
Inspector GRP Cantt Hemant Kumar Singh said that massive checking drives were being carried out at the railway station in view of Eid, Pushkaralu and Akshya Tritiya festivals and urban local bodies election on Saturday when a suspicious looking youth was intercepted by the police at platform no 8.
On checking his bag the cops found it sewed at many places under which cash worth Rs 27,48,220 was found hidden, said Singh. Following the recovery of cash, IT officials were alerted after which they sent a team of investigators.
The youth was identified as Abhinit Kumar of Nalanda district in Bihar. He divulged that he is a student and his family’s financial condition was poor. One Ranjit in Nalanda gave him an offer to pay Rs 10,000 for bringing a consignment of cash worth Rs 15 lakh from Varanasi, said the GRP. Accepting Ranjit’s offer, Abhinit reached Varanasi by Farakka Express where a person handed him the bag containing cash outside the railway station, he added. GRP personnel nabbed him as he was going to board train for Nalanda.
After completing basic legal formalities and checking credentials of Abhinit, the GRP and IT officials released him. IT is continuing probe of unaccounted cash.
