Urban Cruiser: Made-in-India Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder launched in South Africa – Times of India


Japanese Automaker Toyota has launched the Made-in-India Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder SUV in South African markets. The Urban Cruiser Hyryder goes by the name Urban Cruiser and the SUV gets a single-engine option with fewer features.

The Urban Cruiser is offered with three variants and a sole 1.5-litre NA Petrol engine paired with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission. The SUV does not get a 1.5-litre strong hybrid engine or AWD. The price for the Urban Cruiser starts from 329,400 South African Rand (about Rs 14.8 lakh at current exchange rates).

The Urban Cruiser in Africa is available in three variants – XS, XR, and XR AT. Features include a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, keyless entry, push start/stop button, cruise control, automatic climate control, and six airbags. The SUV misses out on a larger infotainment unit, digital instrument cluster, 360-degree camera and many more.

Toyota launched the Urban Cruiser Hyryder back in September 2022. The SUV gets two engine options – Toyota’s 1.5-litre TNGA Atkinson Cycle engine which makes 92hp and 122Nm of torque and Maruti’s 1.5-litre K15C engine which produces 103hp and 137Nm of torque.

The SUV is available in four variants – E, S, G and V. The mild-hybrid tech will be standard across the range. The strong hybrid, meanwhile, is offered on the S, G and V trims.
Toyota recently launched the CNG-powered Urban Cruiser Hyryder at Rs 13.23 lakh (ex-showroom). The CNG variant of the Hyryder is available in two variants – G and S. The G variant is priced at Rs 15.29 lakh and the S variant is priced at Rs 13.23 lakh (ex-showroom). The CNG variant is more expensive at Rs 95,000 than the Petrol manual variants.
The Hyryder CNG is powered by the same 1.5-litre K-series NA Petrol engine which puts out 103 bhp of power and 136 Nm of torque. However, in CNG mode the engine produces lower 88 bhp of power and 121 Nm of torque. It delivers 13hp and 14.5Nm less than the petrol variant. The gearbox option includes only a 5-speed manual. Toyota claims a fuel efficiency of 26.6km/kg.
The Urban Cruiser Hyryder competes with Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara.
