LUCKNOW: Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared open the third edition of the Khelo India University Games (KIUG) 2022 via video conference at BBD University Cricket Ground in Lucknow on Thursday.
Over 4,000 players in 202 teams will participate in 21 sporting events during the ten-day event. Four cities across UP – Lucknow, Varanasi, Greater Noida and Gorakhpur – will host most events. Only the shooting events are scheduled in New Delhi. In its third edition, the games are now India’s biggest multi-sport competition at the higher education level. The event will conclude on June 3 at Banaras Hindu University (BHU).

UP doing excellent work for development of sports, says PM
Being the MP of UP, I welcome all the players coming to UP. The organization of the Khelo India University Games will change the sports environment in the universities, and this sports festival will take the country to a new height,” he said.
Praising the Yogi government, PM Modi said that excellent work is being done in UP for the development of sports. He expressed delight that the closing ceremony of the event will take place in Varanasi which is his constituency.
“All the players who have come to Khelo India have come from different states anddifferent regions. Earlier, there used to be scams in sports and now there is a new atmosphere regarding sports in the whole country,” he said.
“The National Educational Policy has proposed to take sports as a subject where it will become a part of the curriculum, and the construction of the country’s first National Sports University will further strengthen the cause,” the PM added.
Among those present at the ceremony were Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath, Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Anurag Thakur and Minister of State for Sports Nisith Pramanik.
