UP: Banaras Hindu University faculty found dead on campus | Varanasi News – Times of India



VARANASI: An assistant professor of Geophysics at the Banaras Hindu University, Rohtas Kumar (40) was found dead in his residence on the campus on Thursday.
The police are investigating the matter. His family members have been informed about the incident.
According to reports, Rohtas lived alone in the teachers’ apartment on the BHU campus. His wife had visited him a week ago. According to eyewitnesses, Rohtas was last seen throwing garbage at around 8am on Thursday.
The incident came to light when some of his friends went to his residence in the afternoon to see him after getting no response despite several phone calls. The doors were locked from inside. The matter was informed to the BHU Proctorial Board. When the security guards broke open the doors, Rohtas was found lying on the bed. A doctor living in the same building was called to examine him. Later, he was taken to the Sir Sunderlal Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His body was kept in BHU mortuary.
The police said the cause of death could be clear only after post-mortem. No suicide note was found in his flat. According to BHU outpost in-charge Sunil Kumar, prima facie the cause of death seems to be cardiac arrest. The body was sent for post-mortem.
Rohtas was an earthquake scientist in the Geophysics department of BHU. He belonged to Karnal, Haryana. He had done his PhD from BHU and worked as a researcher at IIT-Roorkee till 2013. He was appointed assistant professor in the Geophysics department of BHU in 2016. The people on the campus are in shock after his death.
