Ulb Election: Will Independents And Rebels Dent Bjp’s Prospects ? | Allahabad News – Times of India

Prayagraj: For many wannabes who contested for the post of corporator from the Sangam City, May 13 day will prove a litmus test.
Supported by enthusiastic supporters independent and rival challengers are likely to dent the prospects of known faces from ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), going by assertions of political observers.
This urban local body polls, the BJP leadership with an aim to win maximum number of wards, had not only taken up hectic campaigning but also held a public meetings of senior party leaders including Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya.
Poll observers, however, claimed apart from low voting percentage, the presence of independents and rebels could dent BJP prospects.
With leaders of all parties including Samajwadi Party, Congress, Bahujan Samaj Party, Aam Admi Party (AAP) and BJP are busy in their calculations and terming the polling percentage in their respective favour, the real picture will be cleared only on counting day. The leaders of the ruling party (BJP) that expelled highest 32 number of its workers and office bearers for six years from the party on the charges of involving anti party activities, are more anxious compared to rival camps. The rebels have good impact in their respective wards and majority of them contested as independents after being denied tickets.
A senior BJP functionary admitted to TOI, “Independents and rebels could dent our prospects. As the polling percentage was around 31.45 % and majority of BJP supporters failed to track their names in voters list on the polling day, we have no other option to wait and watch instead of staking big claims of winning maximum number of wards”.
He also admitted “ The state leadership is seeking feedback from Mahanagar leadership about each and every ward polling report and low polling percentage has undoubtedly left the leadership in a catch 22 situation”.
Poll analysts claimed there was a neck to neck fight in at least 65 out of 100 wards in city and the margin of winning would not be more than 200-300 votes. Contest at rest 35 wards was so close that the winning margin will be less than 100 votes. Such speculations have left the leaders of all political parties puzzled who are busy in their own calculations.
A senior BJP leader, meanwhile, said “We have stake on winnable candidates in at least 70-75 out of 100 wards and hope to script success stories”. The contest for mayoral post would also be neck to neck as all prominent political parties including BJP, SP, BSP and BJP have their calculations and arguments.
