PRAYAGRAJ: Stakes are high for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the counting of votes on Saturday for the urban local body polls as the results will signal if the party has still maintained its confidence among masses and making further inroads in view of 2024 parliamentary elections.
The ULB poll results will also decide whether the BJP has managed to dent the vote bank of rival camps including SP, BSP and Congress. Apart from mayoral post, the ruling BJP has set a target of winning at least 65-70 out of 100 wards in the Prayagraj Municipal corporation.
Overall, the election result will also be a test for Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya in his home turf and his popularity.
On other hand, it’s a do and die situation for the Congress’s to check its ability to pull itself out of its worst times brought about by a series of poll defeats.
The Congress couldn’t do well in 2022 state assembly poll, but the party leadership was optimistic about municipal polls after witnessing return of Muslim vote bank into its fold ahead of polling.
Moreover, both Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) have their own calculations of winning urban local body polls. They claim that their vote bank is intact and no other camp could dent their prospects. While Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath himself was leading the BJP’s campaign in state with his ministers’ frequent trips to the Sangam City, the urban local body poll results election are also crucial for all political parties ahead of 2024, when country will vote to elect its next union government.
The city had witnessed 31.45 percent polling on May 4 when the fate of 21 mayoral and 909 corporator posts candidates was locked in EVMs.
Although May 13 poll results will speak about the winners but the startling fact was that independent and rival challengers have dent the prospects of known faces from ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), going by assertions of political observers. However, BJP leadership had maintained hectic campaigning and even organised a public meetings of senior party leaders including Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya.
On Friday, leaders of all parties including Samajwadi Party, Congress, Bahujan Samaj Party, Aam Admi Party (AAP) and BJP were busy in their calculations and terming the polling percentage in their respective favour.
A senior BJP functionary preferring anonymity told TOI, “Party candidates will script success story despite odds.”
