Two Boatmen Held For Overloading; Death Toll Rises To 4 | Varanasi News – Times of India



Varanasi: Ballia police, on Tuesday, arrested two boatmen in connection with Monday’s boat tragedy. Meanwhile, the death toll rose to four with the recovery of the body of a missing youth.
Bharatiya Janata Party MP of Ballia Virendra Singh Mast also held a meeting with district magistrate Ballia Ravindra Kumar and SP Raj Karan Nayyar on Tuesday and asked to ensure strict compliance of safety measures to avoid recurrence of such incidents.
On being contacted over phone, DM Ballia confirmed the recovery of the body of a missing youth on Tuesday after which the death toll rose to four. The NDRF team engaged for rescue operation after a boat capsized in river Ganga near Maldepur ghat under Fefna police station in Ballia, succeeded in fishing out the body of Surendra Yadav (32). On Monday, three women had died in this incident while five were admitted to the district hospital.
SP Ballia said two boatmen Manuji and Ramdayal, who had fled the scene after their boat had capsized near Maldeypur ghat on Monday, were arrested on Tuesday. The duo have confessed that their boat capsized due to overloading.
DM Ballia said that strict guidelines have been issued for safe boat operation in the district. Nodal officers and ghat monitors are also being deployed to monitor it, he added.
