Varanasi: Doctors at the department of pediatric surgery of Sir Sunderlal Hospital Banaras Hindu University removed surgically three fetuses detected in the abdomen of a 14-day-old child.
A team of doctors of the department comprising Ruchira, Chetan, Greeshma and Amrita performed the surgery on Sunday. Ruchira said, “The baby had a distended abdomen, jaundice and respiratory problems since birth and was referred from the peripheral health centre after X-Ray revealed presence of three skeletal systems in the abdomen.”
The child was Ruchira’s case. She said, after admission, other diagnostic tests, including ultrasonography and CT scan were conducted on the child which confirmed presence of fetus in fetu. The three fetuses in abdominal cavity had displaced the common bile duct and kidney, she said.
Members of the team said the surgery was extremely difficult and complicated because of common bile duct displacement and the operation lasted three hours. This is a rare disease found in only one among 5 lakh cases, they said, adding, the child is in the pediatric surgery ward and in stable condition.
