LUCKNOW: Almost ten days after Bhojpuri actress Akanksha Dubey, 26, was found dead in a hotel room in Varanasi, her boyfriend, singer Samar Singh, a Bhojpuri singer, was arrested from Ghaziabad on Friday.
Varanasi police commissioner Ashok Mutha Jain confirmed the arrest of Samar Singh to TOI.
Another senior police officer said that a Sarnath police team of the Varanasi police commissionerate reached Ghaziabad late on Thursday, and with the assistance of Ghaziabad police, nabbed the accused singer, Samar Singh, from the Charms Castle (housing) society in Rajnagar Extension area.
“The accused was presented in a Ghaziabad court for transit remand of 24 hours and was being brought to Varanasi,” said additional DCP Nipun Agarwal.
A red corner notice was also issued against Samar and his brother Sanjay Singh. Samar has been accused of abetting the actress’ suicide by Akanksha’s mother and was absconding since her demise, said the police. His brother Sanjay Singh has also been named as another accused in the complaint filed by Akanksha’s mother Madhu Dubey.
Samar Singh’s 2015 Bhojpuri song ‘Ganna Ke Ras’ has been viewed more than 86 million times on the internet. In 2019, he also started working in Bhojpuri movies.
Akanksha was found hanging inside a hotel room in Sarnath on March 26. Her mother had claimed that Samar used to beat her daughter and that his brother had threatened to kill her. Samar and Sanjay had fled Varanasi on the day Akanksha was found dead in a hotel room in the city. Akanksha had gained popularity through her Instagram account which has over 1.9 million followers.
She often shared her dancing reel videos. She debuted in the Bhojpuri cinema with a cameo in the film ‘Meri Jung, Mera Faisla’. The actress made her relationship with Samar Singh official with a post on Valentine’s Day on her Insta.
Lawyer Shashank Shekhar Tripathi, who has taken up the case for Madhu Dubey, has demanded an investigation by the CBI or CB-CID into the case, and raised questions over the post-mortem report. In a letter to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, he alleged that Dubey did not die by suicide, but was rather killed by someone present in the hotel.
