Prayagraj: Residents of Sangam city faced a tough time reaching their destinations or going home from railway station or bus depot as public transport went off the roads, on Thursday due to civic elections. As city went to polls, most of the roads wore a deserted look.
Since morning, all the major roads of the city had a very thin attendance as the limited vehicles were that of the voters going to the nearby polling center to cast their votes. The number of private vehicles too was quite low throughout the day as the offices and schools were closed.
However, there were many roads where e-rickshaw were seen moving and being used by the commuters to reach their destinations. Be it the main MG road of Civil lines, the otherwise busy road of dense market areas of Chowk and Katra were quite empty. At many areas, locals were seen enjoying playing cricket as the weather too supported their purpose.
All the shops, be it major markets in prominent localities or the malls, most of them remained closed. However, by evening many of the shops, mainly of the colonies, started opening up but the numbers of customers were quite thin.
Those on the roads were only the ones who were going to nearby polling booths, and there too the police asked them to stop at a distance. Only the elderly or those with medical issues were permitted to go near the polling booths on their vehicles.
However, by the evening, the activities on the roads slightly came back to normal as more people came out. Since many of the restaurants and shops opened in the evening, locals were seen arriving for outings.
“Since I had cast my vote in the morning itself, my kids kept on asking me to go for an outing and after the polling time was over, I took my family for dinner,” said Gopal Srivastava, a resident of Sulem sarai.
