PRAYAGRAJ: Prayagraj will choose its next mayor on May 4, in the first phase of polling for the urban local body elections. The mayor will go on to occupy the chair which has been a part of 108-year-old history.
Made by artisans in Bareilly, the chair is a part of the “mini Sadan” which itself is 110 years old. The chair in question was once occupied by political leaders like Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Lal Bahadur Shastri who went on to become prime ministers of India.
Shiv Charan Lal was the first chairman of the Allahabad Municipality on October 10, 1916.
Before the formation of Allahabad Municipality (1914), the British had constructed the Sadan, now popularly called as mini Sadan, after which joint chairs and tables were installed for the members . At the same time, a special wooden chair was summoned from Bareilly for the chairman.
Shiv Charan Lal, Purushottam Das Tandon, Kamta Prasad Kakkar sat on this chair and operated the House. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru sat on this chair after becoming the chairman of the Allahabad Municipality on April 3, 1923. After Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri also sat on this chair.
Rajendra Paliwal, a former employee leader of the corporation, said before independence the British government had brought the chair from Bareilly.
According to former head of the department of modern and medieval History at Allahabad University, Prof Yogeshwar Tiwari, “For the first time in 1863, the municipal committee was formed under British rule. At that time 50 members were nominated in the committee. While six were ex-officio members, the remaining 19 were elected every year.”
