AGRA: At last month’s trial run, Vande Bharat express train moving from Bhopal to Delhi via Agra ran over cattle near Hodal in Haryana. The semi-high speed trains operating in other parts of the country have encountered over a dozen such incidents in the past six months.
In reply to a question raised in Parliament, data shared by minister of railways Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed that “as many as 53,660 cattle run over incidents by trains have been reported in the country in last two years – 26,181 in 2021 and 27,489 in 2022.”
According to railways, instances of cattle run over have adversely affected rail operations, increasing the possibility of rail accidents, including derailments. This also endangers the safety of passengers and may lead to disruption of rail traffic and loss to rail property. Highlighting measures to stop cattle run over incidents, the minister stated: “Existing provisions stipulate fencing at vulnerable locations for speed above 110 kmph to 130 kmph and all along the track for speed above 130 kmph, as a minimum standard.” The minister was responding to a question raised by Rajya Sabha MP KC Venugopal. “Distance of fencing from the centre line of nearest track is decided keeping in view the site conditions, requirement of service road for any maintenance or renewal works, keeping space for material loading/unloading, multi-tracking works, level of trespassing and overall effectiveness of proposed fencing,” the minister said.
Last month, the minister told the Parliament that “hundreds of cases had been registered under the sections 154 and 164 of the Railways Act, 1989, against persons where cattle are found moving on railway land and many of them have been arrested since 2019.”
The minister pointed out that in 2019, 35 cases were registered and 51 persons were arrested. The number increased in the last three years with 356 cases registered in 2022 and 438 arrested.
