PRAYAGRAJ: The closure of both ways of road under bridge no 38 (Niranjan bridge) from Johnstonganj crossing towards Niranjan cinema has left over 100 traders in a fix. With district traffic police authorities placing barricading at Johnstonganj crossing and blocking traffic movement towards Niranjan bridge following the construction work at Niranjan bridge, traders asserted their business has been adversely affected in absence of customers.
Apart from shops of cycles, spectacles, clothes located between Johnstonganj crossing and Niranjan cinema, business of hotels and restaurants has also been affected. A delegation of traders on Wednesday appealed district authorities and commissioner of police to shift the barricading close to Niranjan bridge site from Johnstonganj cross so that the business of traders could not be affected.
Traders told TOI, “Traffic police authorities have placed barricading at Johnstonganj crossing to restrict the movement of vehicles and pedestrians towards Niranjan cinema site. The move has left impact on business community adversely and the attendance of customers have come down. If traffic police authorities shift the barricading close to the Niranjan bridge, it would help both traffic police authorities and traders. We are not against barricading but demanding to shift it close to Niranjan bridge site only”.
Another trader said. “Closure of both ways of Niranjan bridge has affected the traders as the Niranjan road under bridge was prime connecting street between old city and Civil Lines”.
Although traffic police authorities have diverted the routes to ease traffic congestion following the closure of Niranjan bridge, the placement of barricading at Johnstonganj crossing has hampered the movement of customers towards the shops located between Johnstonganj crossing and Niranjan cinema. As both ways of Niranjan bridge will be closed for next three months, it would surely hit the traders hard and so they have been appealing concerned authorities to replace the barricading close to Niranjan bridge.
Traffic Inspector (TI), Amit Kumar, meanwhile, told TOI, “The barricading at Johnstonganj crossing was placed after analysing vehicle and pedestrian movement. If we place barricading close to Niranjan site, visitors would start parking their vehicles on street between Johnstonganj crossing and Niranjan bridge and it would create further chaos.”
Traffic Inspector, however, said, “Cops have not restricted the movement of pedestrians and two wheelers”. Meanwhile, following the closure of Niranjan bridge, both Rambagh and Lukerganj bridges witnessed heavy traffic jams on frequent intervals. The jam was witnessed more during afternoon and evening hours. Daily commuters, office goers, and school children suffered the most. Commuters, however, alleged that traffic chaos was on the both the bridges due to traffic police mismanagement and added that the department should deploy additional manpower to manage traffic.
On other part, traffic police officials claimed that there has been additional volume of vehicle being plied on both the bridges during peak hours and road users violating the lane follow system have caused frequent traffic jams.
With district authorities giving approval to close both ways of the road under bridge no 38 ( Niranjan bridge) near Surajkund and Johnstonganj crossing for 100 days from May 9, traffic police authorities have no other option to divert traffic on alternative routes.
