Kanpur: The Chakeri police on Monday arrested a member of the interstate gang of mobile phone thieves who had come to Kanpur from Jharkhand to sell stolen mobiles. The police have recovered 181 stolen mobile phones from his possession. The arrested accused, a resident of Jharkhand told investigators that he had stolen these mobiles within the last one month.
“On getting information about the presence of more vicious gang members in Kanpur, we have stepped up strict vigil and with the help of surveillance input started looking for them,” said DCP East Ravindra Kumar Singh.
DCP said that the mobile phone thief has been identified as Rajkumar Mahto, resident of village Maharajpur Naya Tola police station, district Sahibganj in Jharkhand. “Rajkumar was arrested by the Chakeri police from near the Gol Chakkar with 181 stolen mobile phones,” he said and added, “During interrogation, Rajkumar told that he had come to the city last month with five people including his elder brother and used to steal mobiles in crowded places.”
Police and surveillance teams are now on the lookout for other members of the mobile thieves gang.
Rajkumar Mahato told that he had to go from Jharkhand to Delhi to dispose off the 181 stolen mobile phones.
“He told that stolen mobile phones from many states are bought in Delhi at low prices. Their IMEI is hacked in a big market, after that the mobiles are shipped to other states and country,” informed an official privy to the investigation.
