Prayagraj: The Sangam city perhaps enjoys the rare distinction of witnessing many local leaders, who learnt the intricacies of politics at the Mini Sadan of Prayagraj Municipal Corporation, making it to the national level.
The municipal corporation has given the country PMs and governors too.
With the political fever, related to civic body elections, heating up, the pages of the city’s golden past from Nagar Palika to Municipal Corporation are once again being revisited at political meetings and tea stall discussions. As per the records, Shiv Charan Lal, was elected the first chairman of the then Allahabad Municipal Corporation in October 1916.
After this, Rajshri Purushottam Das Tandon was elected as chairman on January 3, 1921. In this sequence, Kamta Prasad Kakkar, also known for his development works for the city, remained chairman from March 23, 1922 to March 29, 1923.
The first Prime Minister of the country, Jawaharlal Nehru had also started his political innings from the municipality of this city. Nehru had been the fourth chairman of this municipality. Lal Bahadur Shastri, the second Prime Minister, also reached the Delhi Darbar through the Mini Sadan of this city.
In the changed times, even though the Congress has reached political emptiness in this workplace of Nehru, but as soon as the notification of the civic polls was announced, people have started remembering him amid the rising political temperature.
“This city has had a political legacy of several leaders. Apart from Nehru, Shastri, stalwarts like Biswambhar Nath Pandey have emerged from here only,” said an old timer Baba Awasthi.
According to former head of the department of modern and medieval History at Allahabad University, prof Yogeshwar Tiwari: “For the first time in 1863, the Municipal Committee was formed under British rule. At that time 50 members were nominated in the committee. Of which six were ex-officio members and the remaining 19 were elected every year.”
He further added, after this, 13 municipal committees, including Allahabad, were formed in 1867 in which the president and vice-president were nominated for two years. At that time the president and vice-president were mostly British. In 1883 limited powers were given to the North Western Provinces and Oudh Municipality. In 1916, the Allahabad Municipal Board was formed with Shivcharan Lal as its president. In 1921, Purushottam Das was elected the chairman, said prof Tiwari.
