Varanasi: While elections to the Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC) were underway on Thursday, a large number of people were found busy complaining about missing of their names in the voter list. Many of them were surprised to see names of dead persons of their families in the list.
Not only in localities of old wards but also in areas like Lehdupur and Tilmapur, which have been newly included under VMC limits, people could be found searching for their names in the voter list.
A native of Ashapur, Ashutosh, who had reached the designated polling booth along with other family members carrying their voter cards, said they had been voting in panchayat polls before the area was included in VMC and also in Lok Sabha and Assembly elections for years. But this time, he could not find his name and of his family members.
On the other hand, a Jagatganj native at Queens College polling booth said he and his family members were surprised to see the name of his grandfather, who died years ago. “We had informed the booth level officer about the death of my grandfather to ensure deletion of his name but it still exists,” he added.
In Bhelupur ward, people at Shankuldhara booth complained of an erroneous voter list. In the list, 48 voters were shown as son or daughter of one Ramkala Das. Among them, the age of 10 voters was shown as 37 years while five of them were 39 years. A Photo of the voter list went viral on social media.
When contacted, district election officer/ district magistrate S Rajalingam said, “The matter had come to my knowledge. I personally checked one of those complaints when it was found that despite a change in ward following new delimitation, the complainant was trying to search his name in the electoral roll of the old area. Names had been shifted to the list of concerned wards following delimitation.” Efforts were also made to make the electoral roll error-free by giving chances to see it and file objections in case of any error, he said.
With inclusion of 87 villages in VMC limits, delimitation of the entire city area was done. During this process, the number of wards reached 100 from 90 while areas of many old wards were merged with other wards, the official added.
