Locals Stage Protest Over Death Of 2 Youths; Attack Cops Too | Varanasi News – Times of India



Varanasi: An angry mob of locals attacked a police team when the cops were trying to disperse their gathering from Varanasi-Lucknow highway on Sunday morning. Locals had blocked the road after killing of two youths in a road accident that took place on Saturday late night.
Circle officer SP Upadhyaya said that on Saturday late night two youths- Sujit and Sujit Kumar of Kulahnamau village of Baksha area were returning home on a motorcycle when a speeding truck hit them near Prasad crossing under the limits of Gaura Badshahpur police station. One youth had died on the spot while other succumbed to injuries in hospital, he said adding, the truck had been seized by the police. The driver of truck had managed to escape.
Angered over the killing of both the youths, scores of locals blocked Varanasi-Lucknow highway on Sunday early morning and staged massive protest. On getting information of road blocking, a sub-inspector Ajay Singh along with other policemen including Hansraj Yadav, Nandlal Yadav and Udai Pratap reached the spot and tried to disperse the gathering of locals to clear the highway and restore traffic movement.
However, on seeing the bid of policemen the mob of locals attacked them by hitting with bricks, sticks and also damaged their vehicles. On being alerted by injured cops, Upadhyaya along with cops of several police station reached the spot. Upadhyaya said that officials tried to convince the villagers to call off their stir but when they tried turning violent again, police used force to disperse them.
Several persons, including those who had provoked villagers to attack policemen, had been held and taken to police station, he said adding, both the bodies were sent for postmortem examination.
