Varanasi: The holy city of Varanasi is all set to host the third edition of the Khelo India University Games -2023. Groups of students started arriving in Varanasi to take part in the sports events. The first batch of students from Pune University reached here on Tuesday evening to participate in the event. The players were accorded a grand welcome at the station.
According to the schedule, Varanasi will host two sports events— wrestling from May 26 to 29 and Yoga from June 1 to 3. A total of 240 players will take part in the wrestling events, while 96 players will participate in yoga events. The closing ceremony will be organised on June 3 at the Banaras Hindu University.
Meanwhile, as a part of the public awareness campaign, a yoga programme was organised at the Ramesh Srinivasan Student Activities Center of IIT-BHU on Tuesday. The event was attended by about 150 people including sports department officials, players and BHU Sports Authority of India (SAI) Center’s wrestling and athletic officials.
Recently, divisional commissioner Kaushal Raj Sharma held a meeting of the officials to review the preparations for the KIUG. The meeting was attended by the ADM (city), Gulab Chandra, ADM (protocol), Bachchu Singh, regional sports officer, RP Singh and others.
The commissioner directed the officials to conduct mock drill and routine run of firefighting, electricity and other necessary facilities in hotels and guest houses reserved for participants, coaches, trainers, referees and visiting officials. The RSO was directed to conduct various programmes like yoga practice, walkathon at ghats for public participation and public awareness.
As per the schedule announced by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Uttar Pradesh, the 12-day-long games will be held in four of UP’s cities including Varanasi, Noida, and Gorakhpur and Lucknow. The KIUG Uttar Pradesh 2023 will feature around 4,000 athletes from various institutions across the country. All athletes will be in the under-27 category and will vie for medals in 21 sports.
