PRAYAGRAJ: Internal bickering in BJP over the recent induction of Samajwadi Party leader Raees Chandra Shukla into the saffron fold may dent the party’s prospects in the upcoming urban local body polls, feel insiders.
While cabinet minister Nand Gopal Gupta ‘Nandi’s has expressed displeasure over Shukla’s entry deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya said the move would benefit the saffron party. The development has prompted the Nandi camp to adopt a ‘wait and watch’ approach which in turn may hamper the campaigning of the BJP’s mayor candidate and leave the voters confused.
“Instead of taking the local party MLA into confidence and without giving any prior and formal information, the joining of SP leader Raees Chandra Shukla into party fold during a function was insulting and objectionable,” Nandi had said.
Nandi had defeated Shukla in 2022 state assembly election from Allahabad south assembly constituency.
Nandi cited the entry of Shukla in BJP as entirely illegal and alleged “Apart from disregarding and defying local MLA, the joining of rival camp candidate into BJP fold was a very serious issue as well as a deep conspiracy.”
Meanwhile, Maurya, who was in sangam city on Sunday to attend a series of programmes, said entry of good leaders from rival camps will benefit the party.
“Jo acche log rival parties se ayenge aur jo kahrab honge, party se bahar jayenge,” he had said.
However, senior BJP leadership denied talks of rifts and claimed that the party was currently focused on winning urban local body polls. “There was no internal fighting in BJP and all senior leaders of party are working hard to script success stories. All party workers and leaders will be jointly working to ensure the triumph of party mayoral and corporator candidates,” a senior BJP functionary told TOI.
Nevertheless, ground level party workers think otherwise. “Bickering in the party during the time of polling is not a good sign and it could dent BJP’s prospects in urban local body polls,” said workers.
Another senior party leader said: “Internal differences doesn’t matter and, party is seeking votes on the name of PM Modi Ji and CM Yoji. BJP workers are connecting with people and seeking their support on issues of development and improved law and order scenario.”
