Independents Pick Catchy Poll Symbols | Allahabad News – Times of India



PRAYAGRAJ: With urban local body polls around the corner, candidates are making all efforts to woo the voters not just by their poll promises but also through their unique and catchy election symbols.
From khadau (wooden slippers), rising Sun, earthen pot (gamla) and pen & ink, Imli, to car, hammer, trumpet, camera, aero plane, scooter and rickshaw, independent candidates have picked some unique symbols to woo voters with a sign that not only seems timely but also carries a message.
While candidates of major political parties are contesting polls under the party symbols but for the independent candidates it is all about the symbols that conveys their message to the electorate. An independent candidate from Rajapur ward has chosen tap as his symbol.
“Tap is one of the most important thing in this summer season to quench the thirst of people and animals alike. With mercury rising by every passing day, hence, this symbol will be easily remembered by the people,” he said.
Similarly, independent candidate Sachin Jaiswal urges voters to mark their approval by stamping on the ‘mango’ — a symbol he chose to hit his target like king of fruits in summer season.
Sachin, contesting for the post of corporator from ward no 57 (Kashiraj Nagar) is connecting with eligible voters while carrying the dummy of his election symbol.
Raj Kishore with “shuttle cock” election symbol is also contesting as an independent candidate from another ward and is an avid badminton fan.
“I watch all badminton championship matches whenever I get some time,” he added.
Alok Kumar, a finance expert contesting from old city said: “I chose a ‘boy-girl’ as my poll symbol as it is the future. People are keen to educate their children be it boy or girl and we often talk about better future of our children by offering them better educational atmosphere and civic amenities.”
Majority of independent candidates apprise voters about their election symbols in their own styles.
“I wanted to highlight the need to promote education so I choose pen & ink as my election symbol,” said another candidate.
This urban local body polls, independent candidates contesting from all 100 wards are being allotted 42 different election symbols.
Around 1,000 candidates, including from political parties like BJP, SP, BSP, Congress and AAP, are contesting the ULB polls for corporator posts.
