In Varanasi BJP’s Ashok Tiwari defeats SP by 1.33L votes to become new mayor | Varanasi News – Times of India



VARANASI: Maintaining its monopoly on the mayor’s seat of Varanasi Municipal Corporation since 1995, Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP’s) Ashok Tiwari defeated Samajwadi Party’s Om Prakash Singh by a marhin of 1,33,137 votes on Saturday.
Congress party’s Anil Srivastava had to be satisfied with the third place in the tally of 11 candidates.
As per final results announced late evening Tiwari secured 2,91,852 votes while Singh could manage 1,58,715. Srivastav’s run stopped at 94,288.
At the beginning of counting of votes at Pahadiamandi in the morning, Tiwari took a lead over the SP candidate. Tiwari had taken a lead of around 5,500 votes in the first round of voting and kept increasing the margin of lead in each round with the progress of counting.
The counting of 6,49,915 votes cast for mayoral election of VMC was scheduled in 27 rounds. When the counting had reached halfway at 14th round, Tiwari had 1,58,132 votes in his kitty while Singh could bag 85,272. Srivastava, who had crossed the mark of 50,000 votes in 13th round, could reach 58,828 till this round.
In the 17th round, Singh also crossed the mark of one lakh votes. However, the margin of Tiwari’s lead over him had reached over 85,000 till then. Srivastava kept bagging votes in impressive numbers and reached the 65,563 mark by this round but he could not make the contest triangular as it was expected with the beginning of the campaign.
Tiwari crossed two lakhs mark in the 19th round, when the number of his votes reached 2,08,753 while in the 20th round his margin of lead over Singh had become 1,00,802. By touching the mark of 2,27,888, Tiwari had increased his margin of lead over Singh up to 1,04,208 while less than 1.50 lakh votes were to be counted in six more rounds. Srivastava had bagged 77,787 till the 21st round.
Apart from them, Bahujan Samaj Party’s Subhash Chand Majhi too managed to reach a tally in five figures as he secured 36,218 votes by the end of counting while SBSP’s Anand Kumar Tiwari got 12,799 and Aam Aadmi Party’s Sharda Tandon could manage 8,077 votes till this round.
