Every tyre features an alphanumeric DOT code on the sidewalls of the tyre, which can be decoded to identify information such as the tyre’s dimensions, maximum speed and load capacity among others. This code is followed by a 4-digit number, of which, the first two digits denote the week of manufacture and the last two denote the year of manufacture.
For instance, in the code ‘DOT 6l Y5 006X 0416, the 0416 at the end means that the tyre has been manufactured in the fourth week of 2016. It is recommended that one should not use a tyre for more than six years regardless of the deterioration even if it shows minimal external wear.
