PRAYAGRAJ: Her husband was not ready to let her quit maid work, but Gudia says, working with Lunchbox, a tiffin delivery service in Sangam city, has completely changed her attitude. Not only Gudia but four others including Rita Vishwakarma, Santoshi Devi, Rajani and Rajana too feel proud to be self-reliant.
Educated up to class fifth and intermediate, these women, who earlier worked as maids or cook at houses, want to look for better opportunities. Abhishek Shukla, the convener of Shuruaat – Ek Joyti Shikha, an NGO working for slum- based women empowerment and education of children encouraged them to start their tiffin service after discovering their art of cooking and speciality.
All the five women from Hari Nagar and Chungi slum area happily agreed and started connecting with students, office goers, elderly living alone and others to get tiffin facility through online and offline mode.
Rajani, a fifth pass-out says, “We want to do something different and so we were looking for an opportunity to give wings to our dreams. When I came in contact with other women including Ranjana and Santosh, we all agreed to start a tiffin service. Notably, these all five women were imparted training for making delicious food before launching the tiffin service. It’s a beginning and we will be carving a niche for ourselves to script success stories,” said Ranjana . “All we have cooking skills as we have been working as cooks since decades”, said another woman.
“Launching tiffin service by slum women is a new initiative and concept that aims to provide employment, and eventually empowerment, to the women, and clean and tasty food to young professionals and students in the area. We are currently catering to around 50 customers and the list is increasing by every passing day”, says Abhishek Shukla.
These slum -based women are taking advantage of social media platforms to promote their skills and connecting with customers.
