Drains: Noida Set To Clean Up Drains Before Monsoon, Will Hire Contractors | Noida News – Times of India

NOIDA: With about two months to go before the monsoon hits the city, Noida Authority is set to hire contractors for the annual cleaning of drains.
Clogged drains often trigger intense waterlogging after heavy bouts of showers in several residential areas during the rains each year.
Noida’s officer on special duty (OSD) Indu Prakash Singh said, “Two tenders have been issued to hire contractors for the work. We will ensure all drains are cleaned properly so that there is no waterlogging in the rainy season. Drains will be cleaned between 7am and 4pm.”
Besides the drains, around 405 rainwater harvesting pits will be cleaned and repaired before the onset of the monsoon.
In the tender document, Noida Authority advised the agency to observe precautions while cleaning the drain. “The contractor shall be responsible for the damage to any property or any injury to person whatsoever caused by him or anybody in his employment or caused in consequence of his work,” it said.
According to India Meteorological Department, the southwest monsoon normally sets in over Kerala around June 1 and then advances northwards, usually in surges, to cover the entire country around July 15.
KK Jain, the general secretary Federation of Noida Residents Welfare Associations (FONRWA), said the association has written a letter two weeks ago to Noida Authority to get the drains cleaned. “The Authority’s contractual workers normally clean the drain and leave the waste along it at the same spot. During rain, the waste finds its way back into the drain and the entire effort is wasted,” he said.
Jain said several of the 115 sectors associated with FORNRWA face heavy waterlogging during the rains.
A resident of Sector 51, Sanjeev Kumar said his neighbourhood was flooded last year. “The drains should be cleaned throughout the year. We have found that a number of street food vendors and vegetable sellers set up stalls along the roads in the evening and dump plastic, cups, forks and other stuff in drains which slowly chokes them,” he said.
