PRAYAGRAJ: Based on the new education policy (NEP), the UP Rajarshi Tandon Open University (UPRTOU) would be revamping its history curriculum to highlight the valour of Indian rulers as well as include detailed chapter on Veer Savarkar.
“Instead of glorifying the Mughals, the valour of Indian kings and emperors has been prominently included by the open university. Now, the course gives prominence to the Cholas, Chalukyas and Pandya dynasties of South India, along with the kings of the northeast that were not conquered by the Mughals,” said director, school of social sciences of the lone open university of the state, prof Santosha Kumar.
Kumar said students will also be taught more about Veer Savarkar and why was the British so scared that they send him to prison in Andaman and Nicobar Islands (Kala Pani). Along with this, expanding the bravery saga of Maharana Pratap, which is presently limited to Haldighati in the history books, his other fights with Mughals using guerrilla warfare will also be given prominence.
The revised syllabus will be implemented for the academic year 2023-24, he said.
“The history, which has been removed from the rich legacy of the country, has to be compiled back because they are the symbols of resistance and valour of the Hindu kings. The present history curriculum is full of courtly history wherein Akbarnama of Abul Fazal is considered the main source. But, will any courtier be able to write the true history? The history of the common man has been sidelined in what is being taught now. History shows the Marxist approach, which has been reformulated based on research with new ideas,” he said.
Kumar clarified that said lessons of Mughals have not been removed, but dynasties of South India and Northeast have been expanded.
“Like the Ahom Kingdom of the northeast, now known as Asom, was driven by the bravery of its generals in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671. The Mughal army was forced to retreat, and they never dared to attack it again,” said Kumar.
He added that “The British divided history into ancient, medieval and modern whereas, we will teach by dividing it into periods of glory, defeat and reconstruction.”
He added the course will also include lesser known freedom fighters and their heroism. “The new course will be of five years with multiple exit chances. If the student exits after the first year, they will be given a certificate. The second-year exit will provide diploma, third year degree, fourth year degree research and fifth year master’s degree. This syllabus has been prepared and sent to the University Grants Commission (UGC),” he said.
