KANPUR: Five passengers were killed and over 17 others sustained injuries when a bus carrying a wedding party, which was hit by a speeding dumper, overturned and fell into a ditch, near Gopalpura of Jalaun district late on Saturday.
The collision was so severe that the roof of the bus was ripped apart and fell on the other side of the road.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences to the family members of the deceased and directed district authorities to provide proper treatment and all possible help to the injured. He wished the injured a speedy recovery.
Police identified the deceased as Kuldeep Singh, 36, Raghunandan, 46, Sirobhan, 65, Karan Singh, 34 and bus driver Vikas, 32. Police said 40 members of a wedding party were traveling in the bus.
Police said 40 members of a marriage party were traveling in the bus, out of whom, four persons besides the bus driver died, while 17 were injured when the bus overturned and fell into a ditch.
Jalaun SP Iraj Raja said, “When we got information about the accident at 2 am, we sent ambulances and policemen for rescue. The bodies are being sent for postmortem. The driver of the dumper fled along with the vehicle and we are trying to trace him on the basis of CCTV footage.”
Police said Sunil and Pramod, sons of Mulcharan Pal, residents of Mandela got married to Sandhya and Upasana, daughters of Ramdhani of Rampura. “The accident took place when all the ‘baraatis’ (members of the groom’s side) were returning to Mandela after the wedding in Rampura on Saturday night. As the bus reached Gopalpura, ut was hit by a speeding dumper from the opposite side and it overturned and fell into a roadside ditch,” said police who reached the spot on being informed by the locals and passers-by.
Police pulled out the dead and the injured trapped inside the bus and admitted the wounded passengers to Madhogarh Community Health Center. Doctors declared Kuldeep Singh, Raghunandan, Sirobhan, Karan Singh and Vikas dead.
Several other who were critically injured were referred to Orai Medical College. Jalaun district magistrate Chandni Singh reached the medical college to take note of the condition of the injured people.
National president of Samajwadi Party and former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, expressed grief over the death of five persons and expressed condolences to the bereaved families. He demanded a compensation of Rs 1 crore each to families of all those killed in the accident and financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh each to the injured for their treatment. He said neglect by the administration and transport department is causing road accidents every day. “The government should make people strictly follow the traffic rules in order to prevent such accidents,” he said.
