Varanasi: Besides those named by BJP, SP and AAP, hundreds of mayoral candidates filed their papers on the concluding day of the nomination process for the Varanasi Municipal Corporation polls on Monday.
BJP candidate Ashok Tiwari filed his nomination papers in four sets. Senior party leaders and a large number of workers took part in the procession from Ramashray Vatika before the nomination. Sharda Tandon of Aam Aadmi Party and O P Singh of Samajwadi Party also filed their nomination papers for the post of mayor.
The nomination process began on April 11 at ADM (administration) court on collectorate premises, while nomination of candidates for corporator election took place at the zonal offices at Adampur, Dashashwamedh and Bhelupur in in trans-Varuna area. Town Hall was the venue for filing nomination in Kotwali zone.
Scrutiny of papers will take place on Tuesday while withdrawal of papers is allowed till April 20. The symbol will be distributed on April 21 and final list of candidates will also be released the same day. Coting is scheduled on May 4 followed by counting of votes on May 13.
