PRAYAGRAJ: Member of UP Kinnar Welfare Board and state president of Kinnar Akhara, Mahamandleshwar Swami Kaushalyanand Giri aka Tina Maa on Tuesday expressed desire to contest urban local body polls for mayoral post on BJP ticket here.
Tina Maa is among the list of 32 aspirants who have submitted their applications to contest the polls for mayoral post on BJP ticket.
“I have written letters to senior party functionaries, including BJP national party president JP Nadda, to give an opportunity to transgender community to contest in urban local body and town area polls. Trans genders want an opportunity to represent themselves in urban local body and town area polls,” Tina Maa told TOI.
“If transgenders find an opportunity to contest polls, it will help them grow and move forward in the society,” said Giri adding “Transgenders also want their share in politics and their entry into politics can also transform their lives.”
Giri also claimed that transgenders come under OBC category and that they have been urging BJP leadership to give them equal representation by allotting party tickets in urban local body polls as well as town area polls.
Giri also cited examples of transgender Asha and Shabnam Mausi who had been elected as mayor and MLA respectively from Gorakhpur and Madhya Pradesh respectively.
This was the first time when a member of Kinnar Akhara wished to contest polls for mayoral post on BJP ticket in urban local body polls.
Giri said “The kinnar community always talks about the betterment and development of all sections of society. For us, the entire society is our family as kinnars don’t have their own families. I will try and prove my best if BJP gives ticket to me.”
Tina Maa also praised the Yogi-led state government claiming that the BJP-led state government has given respect to transgender community and even formed a state kinnar kalyan board to protect their rights.
