Bhu Vc Reconstitutes Biosafety Committee | Varanasi News – Times of India



Varanasi: The vice-chancellor of Banaras Hindu University, Prof Sudhir Kumar Jain has reconstituted the Institutional Biosafety Committee. The Biosafety Committees are mandated with assisting the institutions handling risk-inherent microorganisms or genetically engineered (GE) organisms, in preparing on-site emergency plan.
According to the BHU spokesperson, the committee chaired by the director of the Institute of Science will work on ensuring personal and environmental safety in the use of any kind of transgenic organisms during the course of research. Dr Bhupendra Narain Singh, senior principal scientist, CDRI, Lucknow, is the DBT nominee in the committee while Dr Richa Arya of the department of zoology is the member secretary.
Dr Vinod Tiwari of the department of Pharmaceutical Engineering, IIT-BHU, has been inducted as the outside expert and Prof Gopal Nath of the department of Microbiology, Institute of Medical Sciences, has been named the Biosafety officer.
The internal experts are prof Pawan Kumar Singh of the department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, prof Rajesh Kumar Mall of the Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development, Dr Samer Singh of the Centre of Experimental Medicine & Surgery, Institute of Medical Sciences, and Dr Akhilesh Kumar of the department of Botany, Institute of Science. tnn
