Varanasi: Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya assured that lack of resources will not be allowed to come in the way of further strengthening the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University.
He held a meeting with the authorities of the Sir Sunderlal Hospital and Trauma Center on the campus on Friday. He said that he will prepare a plan in a meeting with Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan to enhance the facilities at the Institute of Medical Sciences so that the common people coming here for treatment get better facilities.
Professor-in-charge of Trauma Centre, Prof. Saurabh Singh apprised the minister of the challenges being faced in healthcare. He said that the AIIMS receives Rs 20 lakh per bed annually, while BHU is sanctioned Rs 2 lakh per bed per year. Describing the establishment of hospital management information system in the hospital and the trauma centre as an important step, Prof. Singh requested the minister to take initiative in this direction.
Mandaviya said that BHU is a unique institution and has many achievements to its credit. The governance model here should be such that it sets an example for other institutions. Stating the need to further strengthen the infrastructure of medical facilities in the institute, he said that no stone would be left unturned in this direction. He further said that the convergence of modern medicine and Ayurveda in BHU can present a model from which the rest of the world can learn. He assured speedy disposal of proposals related to BHU in the ministry of health.
Vice-chancellor Prof Sudhir Kumar Jain said that BHU Hospital has the potential to become a world class institution. He said that according to the level of load on the health services here, the facilities fall short.
On this occasion, member of NITI Aayog and chairman of the board of governors (BOG) of the Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr. VK Paul said that being a part of a large educational institution, the Institute of Medical Sciences has special features that differentiate it from other institutions.
The meeting was also attended by the director of the Institute of Medical Sciences, Prof. SK Singh, dean-research Prof. Ashok Chaudhary, medical superintendent, Prof. Kailash Kumar, deputy superintendent, Prof. Ankur Singh, Dr. Kavita Meena, joint registrar, Dr. Neeraj Tripathi, and nursing superintendent, Prakash Sharma.
Earlier, the health minister visited the Emergency, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Dialysis Unit of Sir Sunderlal Hospital. He also visited the emergency medicine of trauma center, Ayushman scheme unit, laboratory and blood bank.
