VARANASI: Popular Bhojpuri film star Akanksha Dubey, 25, was found dead in her hotel room in Sarnath area of the city on Sunday morning. She was shooting in the city for her forthcoming film and had returned to her room at Sumendra Residency hotel at 1.55 am after attending a birthday bash on Saturday night. Her body was found in a sitting position on the bed with her stole (dupatta) wrapped around her neck when the door of her hotel room was broken open by police at 10 am on Sunday She was live on Instagram, where she has 1.7 million followers, at 2.25 am on Sunday where she can be seen sobbing. However, in her last Insta post on Saturday, she is gyrating to a Bhojpuri number and appears normal.
Sarnath ACP Gyan Prakash Rai said that as per initial investigation, it appeared to be a case of suicide. Police and forensic teams have collected evidence from the site and her body had been preserved in a mortuary, he said, adding “her parents have been informed about the incident. Police would lodge FIR on the basis of complaint of parents.”
Dubey was a native of Chauri area in Bhadohi district and had settled in Mumbai with her parents. She was shooting in the Nati Imli area of the city for the Bhojpuri film ‘Layak hoo..Nalayak Nahin’ and was staying at the hotel along with director Niraj Srivastava and co-actors Akhilesh Verma, Sanjay Pandey, Oshi Sahu, her assistant Rekha Maurya and other crew members.
At 10 am on Sunday, when Maurya went to wake her up for the shooting, she didn’t respond. There was no response even when the hotel manager Ritesh Kumar called her through intercom. When the hotel team opened the door using the master key, she was found dead inside and police were informed.
Police said that no suicide note was found inside the room which was sealed for the collection of forensic evidence. Manager Ritesh Mehta informed cops that she had left the hotel room at 8 pm on Saturday and came back at 1.55 am. The person who had come to drop her went back at 2.12, as per the hotel record.
Those following her on instagram have shared on social media that she was live for a few seconds at 2.25 am and was sobbing. “That means she died after 2.25 am,” said a police official, adding “we are trying to find out details about the birthday party and the persons she met there.”
From being a social media and TikTok star, Dubey had quickly established herself as a leading actress in Bhojpuri cinema. She started with ‘Meri Jung Mera Faisla’ and was later seen in movies such as ‘Mujhse Shaadi Karogi’, ‘Veeron Ke Veer’ and ‘Fighter King’.
According to reports, she was dating actor Samar Singh and had even posted a picture with him on Valentine’s Day. The actor had just completed shooting of her project ‘Mitti’. The news of her death came on the day her music video ‘Ye Aara Kabhi Hara Nahi’ was to be released. In this, she is paired alongside superstar Pawan Singh.
She had starred in Bhojpuri films with leading heroes of industry, including Khesari Lal Yadav, Samar Singh, Ankush Raja, Samar Mishra among others.
