LUCKNOW: Heat wave conditions intensified in south UP on Monday with maximum temperature touching 46.5 degrees Celsius in Jhansi in Bundelkhand region, making it the hottest place in the country as per the IMD website. There was a brief relief on the cards, however, for the people of Lucknow and surrounding areas from Wednesday onwards as the Met department has predicted a spell of thunderstorms accompanied by rainfall till the weekend.
Agra was also on the boil at 45.6 degrees Celsius. It was followed by Hamirpur at 44.2 degrees Celsius, Prayagraj 44 degrees Celsius, Fatehgarh 43.9 degrees Celsius, Orai 43.5 degrees Celsius, Mirzapur and Aligarh 43.4 degrees Celsius each, Hardoi 43 degrees Celsius and Varanasi 42.5 degrees Celsius.
Overall temperature patterns showed that the mercury levels were lower in west UP districts bordering the hill state of Uttarakhand and the terai belt along Indo-Nepal border in comparison to the south, southwest, central and eastern parts.
Met experts said the Bundelkhand southwest regions of the state witness more heat because of their proximity to Rajasthan and rocky terrain. “A strong western disturbance expected to hit the Himalayas on Tuesday will impact weather conditions in northwest India, including UP, till Sunday.
A cyclonic circulation over eastern UP will help in supply of moisture content from the Arabian sea,” said senior scientist at the Met department Mohammad Danish. “The two factors will start changing the weather conditions in the state from Tuesday evening.
Thunder activities with rains will start from west UP and gradually spread to central, eastern and southern parts of the state on Wednesday and Thursday, bringing relief from the intense heat which ahs been prevailing for the past several days,” he predicted.
In Lucknow, thunder activity with light rainfall is expected from Wednesday evening, which will gradually intensify on Thursday and Friday before declining on Saturday and Sunday,” he said and added: “There will be no significant change in maximum temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday, but mercury levels will fall by 3-4 degrees on Thursday.”
The maximum temperature in Lucknow dropped slightly on Monday to 41.4 degrees Celsius, but was still 1.2 units above normal. It felt like 44-45 degrees due to high relative humidity that oscillated between 34-59%.
The night was also uncomfortable with the minimum temperature at 26.9 degrees Celsius, 1.4 notches above normal. On Sunday, the city recorded 43.2 degrees Celsius temperature
