LUCKNOW: The storm hit Lucknow around 12 noon and lasted for an hour. High velocity winds prevailed for about 33 minutes before subsiding gradually. It peaked around 12.10pm when runway 27 at the Chaudhary Charan Singh International airport recorded the 83 kmph wind speed.
However, at the automatic recording station at the Met department, located around 1km from the runway, the maximum wind speed recorded was 72kmph, said Met officials.
“The reason why so many trees and poles were uprooted was that the storm struck in the form of a thunder squall in which speed of the winds rose significantly within seconds and continued to prevail for about half-an-hour,” they explained.
The weather department has predicted cloudy sky, rain and thunderstorm accompanied with lightning, hail and squall (50-60Kmph) in some parts of west, central and southwest UP on Sunday. The weather will be clear from Monday. Weather office said many UP districts likely to be affected on Sunday include Lucknow, Agra, Aligarh, Auraiya, Baghpat.
In Lucknow, the maximum minimum temperature dropped to 36 degrees Celsius, 6.1 units below normal, and minimum temperature to 23 degrees Celsius, 3.1 notches below normal. About 5.6mm rainfall was recorded at the Met observatory in Amausi, while other parts of city recorded 5-15mm rain. Fortunately there was no inbound or outbound flight from Amausi airport during the storm.
