PRAYAGRAJ: Voting for posts of 100 corporators and one mayor of Prayagraj Nagar Nigam passed off peacefully amid tight security on Thursday with the city recording a voter turnout of 31.45%.
The polling was held between from 7am and 6pm at 1180 polling booths.
According to the State Election Commission (SEC), Prayagraj recorded a polling percentage of about 31.45.
With this fate of 930 candidates, including 21 mayoral and 909 corporator post, was locked in electronic voting machines (EVMs).
There were 15,76,713 voters, including 8,79,930 men and 6,96,783 women, enrolled in nagar nigam electoral list while 1,45,934 voters were enrolled in eight nagar panchayats.
Commissioner of police Ramit Sharma and district magistrate Sanjay Kumar Khatri remained mobile throughout the day and checked polling centres and polling booths in the city.
Sharma told TOI: “The polling for nagar nigam and nagar panchayat passed off peacefully as no untoward incident was reported in the district. Adequate police bandobast were made at all polling centres.”
While polling for mayoral and corporator post for nagar nigam in city was held through EVMs, voting for nagar panchayats, including Lalgopalganj, Mauaima, Phulpur, Handia, Sirsa, Bharatganj, Koraon and Shankargar, was held via ballot papers.
There are 100 wards in Prayagraj municipal corporation.
The voting started at a slow pace in the morning and picked up marginally in the afternoon.
Officials of the district election office claimed that polling percent for nagar nigam at 9am, 11am, 1pm, 3 pm and 5pm was recorded 5.30 %, 8.82 %, 12.10 %, 23 % and 28.59 % respectively.
Similarly, the fate of 584 candidates, including 64 and 520 contesting for chairman and member posts respectively, for eight nagar panchayats was also locked in ballot papers.
Officials said the polling for nagar panchayat was much better compared to nagar nigam.
At 11 am, average polling for eight nagar panchayat was 17,91% while it was 31.24%, 39.23% and 49.93% and 58.08 % at 1pm, 3pm, 5pm and 6pm respectively.
Police said nine persons, including three women, were detained from different polling booths for bogus voting. Three fake Aadhaar cards were also seized.
Senior police officials also maintained a strict vigil at least 67 polling booths in old city areas, including Atala, Kareli, Nakhas Kohna, Attarsuiya, Kasari Masari and adjoining areas that were under the influence of slain gangster Atiq Ahmed.
Adequate number of police mobile teams were also deployed to maintain a close watch in sensitive and vulnerable pockets.
Over 7,000 officials and employees were assigned duties to ensure smooth conduct of urban local body and nagar panchayat polls.
A large posse of policemen, including eight DCP\ADCP, 16 ACPs, 62 inspectors, 680 sub-inspectors, 3000 constables, 2800 homeguards, 62 QRTs, five companies of PAC, one company of BSF, 16 teams each of flying squad and static teams, were deployed to conduct free and fair polls.
