Prayagraj: Seeking Bharat Ratna for slain gangster Atiq Ahmad proved costly to local Congress leader Raj Kumar Singh aka ‘Rajju’, who was expelled from the party for six years by the City Congress Committee leadership, in Prayagraj on Wednesday.
The Congress action against Raj Kumar Singh came after a video, wherein he was seen demanding Bharat Ratna for Atiq, went viral on social media.
Singh had been fielded by the Congress as a candidate in local body polls for the seat of corporator from Azad Square ward no. 43.
President, city Congress Committee, Pradeep Kumar Mishra told TOI, “Our candidate Raj Kumar Singh aka Rajju had been expelled from the party for six years on the charges of indiscipline. Despite being asked not to issue any unwanted statement on Atiq, Singh was continuously ignoring and disobeying directives of the senior party leaders. As a result, he has been expelled from the party for six years”.
The party has also taken his candidature back after expulsion.
Mishra also claimed that the statement given by Singh was his personal opinion and it had nothing to do with the party.
The video that went viral on social media shows Singh saying that “Atiq Ahmad was allegedly killed at the behest of the Yogi-led state government”.
He also demanded the resignation of chief minister Yogi Adityanath.
“Slain Atiq Ahmed, once a public representative, should be given Bharat Ratna with the claim that he was not killed but he was martyred (woh shaheed hue hai). Atiq Ahmed ko Shaheed ka darja diya jana chahiye (Atiq should be given martyr status),” he said adding, “When Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav was conferred with Padma Vibhushan, why Bharat Ratna can’t be given to Atiq Ahmed. Atiq should be given national honour”.
On Wednesday, Singh also visited the grave of Atiq at Kasari-Masari graveyard and shouted slogans “Atiq amar rahe (long live Atiq)”.
He also put up the national flag on the grave and promised to himself that he would seek justice for the don.
