KANPUR: A gang tried to smuggle 250 cartons of English liquor in a truck laden with watermelons. But they ran out of luck and the illegal consignment was seized by the Kalyanpur police and STF at the GT road in the wee-hours of Wednesday.
Kalyanpur inspector Devendra Dubey said the smugglers tried to emulate a smuggling operation depicted in a Telugu movie, wherein the antagonist uses a milk tank to smuggle sandalwood.
“In this case, the accused had stashed 250 cartons of illicit liquor in a watermelon-laden truck. They were heading to Bihar from Chandigarh via Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh). The police team deployed at the GT road grew suspicious when the truck driver failed to provide details on being asked who loaded the watermelons. They made the drivers unload the stock, leading to the seizure of 250 boxes of liquor bottles from the truck,” he said. Police identified the truck driver as Rambabu, resident of Bihar. At the same time, the attendant has been identified as Indrapal, a native of Aligarh. During interrogation, the driver said he gets Rs 50,000 for liquor smuggling per trip. “He said he had no inputs with regard to the illegal liquor syndicate,” said a police official privy to the investigation. Police arrested the driver and attendant and registered FIR against them.
STF inspector Shailendra Singh said on the basis of inputs received in the enquiry, vehicle number and mobile number, teams have been formed to arrest the smugglers.
