Over 3l Kids Covered During Nutrition Fortnight In Varanasi | Varanasi News – Times of India



VARANASI: Varanasi recorded a reduction in the cases of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) and moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) among children in comparison to last year.
The fact was highlighted at an event to mark the recently concluded ‘Poshan Pakhwada’ or Nutritional Fortnight.
The ministry of women & child development is the nodal ministry for coordinating activities during the fortnight. The event aims to raise awareness about the importance of nutrition and promote healthy eating habits through Jan Andolan and Jan Bhagidari.
“There was an improvement in overcoming malnutrition cases in the district,” said the district programme officer (DPO), Dinesh Kumar Singh.
“Around 32,000 children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) and moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) were identified in Varanasi district in 2022, while the number of SAM-MAM children reduced to 24,000 this year,” the DPO told TOI, adding that the situation improved up to 2.75% this year.
According to the officials, over three lakh children were weighed in the district during Poshan Pakhwada. To make the fortnight a success, a 15-member expert team of the central government reached the district on March 26.
A total of 3,05,000 children were given healthy child certificates. Three Anganwadi workers were given a prize of Rs 10,000 and three assistants were given a prize of Rs 5,000 from each child development project for their excellent work during Poshan Pakhwada. A total of 27 Aanganwadi workers and 27 assistants were awarded in the district. Besides, 27 ‘Buddy Mothers’ were also honoured by giving certificates in the district.
