Varanasi: Khelo India University Games wrestling event in 10 weight categories of women and men started at Ramesh Shrinivas Student Activity Centre of IIT(BHU) from Saturday.
Commissioner of police Ashok Mutha Jain and district magistrate S Rajalingam took stock of arrangements and facilities at the event venue.
Following completion of basic formalities, including technical conference, checking of documents, rehearsal of medal distribution and meeting of referies on Friday, the weight of wrestlers was measured in eight weight groups.
Formal wrestling contests started from Saturday morning with qualifying rounds in women category. Most of the wrestlers flexed their muscles and practised on Friday evening.
Jain and Rajalingam also reached the event venue, where 234 wrestlers from 68 universities of countries have gathered and took stock of arrangements.
The DM sought details of facilities of food and stay of wrestlers, coaches and supporting staff. He directed the officials to take care of each participant and ensure all arrangements were in place and took feedback of the participants too.
The organising committee on Friday expanded the food court after noticing overcrowding.
