PRAYAGRAJ: Taking a serious note of the Thursday’s incident in which two MNNIT students were feared drowned in Ganga at Koteshwar Ghat, the Prayagraj police along with Jal police have surveyed the ghats and declared six of them ‘dangerous’ for swimming.
“Many ghats located on Ganga and Yamuna, including Koteshwar, Phaphamau, Baghara, Salori, Daraganj in Ganga and Tarapur, Kakraha ghat, Saraswati ghats on Yamuna river are unsafe. Moreover, a 10 km long stretch on Ganga kachar area is also not safe for swimming. The Prayagraj Commissionerate police is gearing to take these unsafe ghats under its scanner,” in charge of Jal police, Kadedin Yadav told TOI.
He added that “Jal police has advised denizens and swimmers to enjoy swimming at only six ghats– Sangam, Ram Ghat, Kali Ghat, Dashaswamedh ghat, Arial and Chatnag. At these ghats, duties of jal police personnel and thana cops concerned have been assigned to ensure safety and security of people.”
The official said, in summer season, students of professional colleges\university and schools and arrive at ghats in groups for swimming despite the fact they don’t have adequate idea about depth of water. They often bet on crossing rivers – Ganga and Yamuna – and sometime mishaps occur. He added that in the past one-and-half months, at least three incidents of drowning were reported on in which five persons lost their lives. “Majority of youths who arrive at ghats for snan, go for swimming despite the fact that they don’t know swimming. Visitors make many mistakes while swimming or taking bath. People have been advised to follow guidelines for their safety and not enter into deep waters,” Yadav said.
