1st Aortic Root Replacement Operation At Ssh Successful | – Times of India

Varanasi: The Sir Sunderlal Hospital of Banaras Hindu University has introduced aortic root replacement (ARR), Bentall operation at its department of cardiothoracic & vascular Surgery. Head of the department Dr Sanjay Kumar recently operated on a 56-year-old female patient successfully with the Bentall procedure. She was diagnosed with severe incompetence of aortic valve and dilated aortic root and ascending aorta that was causing progressive shortness of breath and chest pain over the last year.
According to Dr Kumar, this heart condition is deadly and if left untreated leads to poor quality of life and often, death due to heart failure. “Aortic root replacement consists of replacing valve sinuses of valsalva with varying amounts of the ascending aorta or combination thereof. This also involves reimplantation of the coronary artery which is quite challenging technically,” he explained.
The team of surgeons led by Dr Kumar including Dr Dev Biswas and Meghna Banerjee operated on the patient. Dr R B Singh led the anesthesia team. Dinesh Maiti, Soumyajit Roy and Akhalesh Maurya were from the Perfusion team. Trivendra Tyagi, Rahul, Chitranjan and Vikas were from the operating nursing team.
The patient recovered and will be discharged soon from the hospital, said Dr Kumar, adding the procedure is a complex open-heart surgery but the patient has been able to resume her usual routine within seven days of the operation.
The procedure like aortic root replacement is an important landmark development as Sir Sunderlal Hospital which has become the only hospital in eastern UP to offer this facility.
Dr Kumar said that aortic root replacement including various valve surgeries, coronary artery bypass surgery, redo surgery, congenital cardiac surgery, surgery for aorta & vascular surgery are done on routine basis at the Sir Sunderlal Hospital, BHU.
Dr Kumar, who has worked in Yale University, school of medicine, Connecticut, US as a heart transplant surgeon, is keen to start the heart transplant facility in BHU and wants to make BHU’s hospital a proud centre in India. He started the regular open-heart surgery for the first time in BHU in 2009.
